Paul Johnson Exhibitions and Paintings at Saatchi-gallery

October 22nd, 2009 StudioFlatsInLondon No comments

Paul Johnson was born on 1972 lives and works in London. Paul Johnson’s exhibition at the gallery in 2003 one had to peer through the diaphanous surfaces of his collages to collect the fragments of an unsettling tableau. Placed over the work was a translucent laminate surface that stood between the picture plane and the viewer and which sealed inside the illusionism of the picture.

As a result, the details of the intensely made collages were removed from close scrutiny and what was left were the after-effects of the image. The graphic qualities of the collages functioned in a remote, imaginary way. There was no narrative immediacy, instead a slow disclosure, emptying out into strange, imaginative worlds. For his new exhibition, The Glass Family, Johnson has removed the laminate surface from his work. What are shown are the intricately, detailed constructions of collages using a technique interlocking fragments of individually hand-colored paper.

His subjects, four portraits – two boys and two girls – and a stairwell, are recovered from old newspapers and magazines; a particular source of Johnson’s imagery is old skateboard and speedway magazines. Found in the work, also, are number of recurring motifs: esoteric badges, logos, marks of symbolism and orb-like discs. These crop up as pictorial, structural devices within the logic of the depiction and also as signifiers of other-worldly attributes and belief systems. He uses them, also, to create an idea of family resemblances and reinforces the notion of the family hewn from the show title. Whilst, they should be read as mental manifestations of the characters personalities, these motifs have an ability to introduce a spatial dimension to what are sometimes flat grounds of background color.

Johnson’s work is framed by an interest in outsider and visionary art. His exhibition follows on from a group of three shows he curated featuring outsider artists: Future Primitive, Prophet Royal Robertson and World B.

A two-sided work in the show mounted on a plinth, whilst allowing him to introduce a new device to explore facets of his own work through close ups and details, is also a reference to the tendency for outsider artists to use both sides of the paper.

Golf Tourism is Set to Become the Next Ace Up Bulgaria’s Sleeve

October 21st, 2009 StudioFlatsInLondon No comments

Legends like Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Ian Woosnam are currently involved in designing several of the new golf courses. Savvy investors should keep their eye on this ball in the near future.Dream Homes Worldwide is presently marketing several Black Sea coast projects, all of which are, or will be, close to the golf courses presently under construction. Kavarna Hills and Kavarna Gardens are two luxury apartment developments set a short distance from the pretty, traditional fishing town of Kavarna. Kavarna Hills will comprise 100 apartments and their elevated position means they will all enjoy sea, golf and port views while being just a five-minute walk from the beach. Kavarna Gardens offers 500 or so one and two bed apartments just two minutes from the beach. Final phase properties will enjoy a five per cent gross rental guarantee over two years. Prices start at £44,135 for a one-bedroom apartment in Kavarna Gardens and £53,640 at Kavarna Hills.Harmony Hills, another Dream Homes Worldwide development, is located 38 kilometres from Varna and within minutes of three new, first-rate golf courses. The project will comprise apartments and a few semi-detached houses, most with superb sea views. All will be fully serviced and managed in order to secure maximum rental income. Prices start at €24,715 for a studio apartment. Some investors are now looking away from the main centres of Golden Sands and Sunny Beach, where prices are considerably cheaper than the main resort areas. Bulgarian Properties earmarks Sozopol, Dyuni (Dunes), Primorsko, Kiten and Lozenets – already being developed into an eco-friendly resort area – as places to watch. They reckon you’ll be paying around £27,160 for a new-build one-bedroom apartment in Lozenets against an average of £37,350 in Sunny Beach, £44,140 in Varna or £47,535 in Golden Sands. Bulgaria is as famous for its mountains as it is for its beaches, and it’s skiing that’s the big draw for holidaymakers here. Bansko is its largest and longest-established ski resort and the fastest growing in Europe. Platinum Developments’ Summit Lodge in Bansko is a stunning four-star development located on the west side of the Glazne River and comprises one-, two-and three-bedroom apartments. Prices start at £29,310.Dream Homes Worldwide is marketing Mountain Residences in Bansko comprising studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury apartments surrounded by the Pirin mountains. Prices start at £46,175 for a studio with seven per cent guaranteed rental for the first two years following completion.Bansko is also evolving into more of an ‘all season’ resort – nearby, at Razlog, Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnan is putting his name to a new 18-hole golf course at the Pirin Golf and Country Club, a five-star resort with superb sports complex, restaurants, spa and beauty centre. Zain Lee, assistant investment manager at Key4Bulgaria says of Pirin’s quality: “This project stands out from anything else which is being sold in Bulgaria at present.” Studios start at £48,667 with three-bedroom houses at £172,672 all bundled with an attractive rental scheme.Samuel and Karen Porter bought in Bansko with Key4Bulgaria. After moving from London to Hertfordshire and releasing equity the couple were keen to buy a holiday home abroad. “We made a bit of money when selling up and moving away from the perils of city life in London,” says Samuel. “We wanted to invest in property but wanted something the family could enjoy as well as being a sound investment.” Booking onto one of Key4Bulgaria’s inspection visits, the couple visited the area that they were attracted to. Karen says of Bansko: “I had been hearing more and more about the skiing in Bulgaria from colleagues and clients at work and the opportunity to go on the slopes while there was fantastic. Our boys are at an age where they will really enjoy outdoor winter pursuits.” Samuel and Karen settled on a one-bedroom apartment close to the main ski lift – it completes in September and the family are booked to spend time in their new holiday home in the Christmas school holidays. The new darling of the mountains in Bulgaria is Pampovoro, the happy recipient of the €255 million (£174 million) Perelik Project, encompassing new pistes, ski lifts, artificial snow equipment, hotels, car parking, a possible golf course and 100 kilometres of new highway construction. Perelik is planned for completion in 2007 and is predicted to boost tourist arrivals by a huge 40 per cent for the next ski season. Aiming to place itself a little higher in the market place than its neighbour Bansko, Pampovoro is also keen to keep a close eye on sustainability and the environment. Key4Bulgaria is offering Orpheus Valley in Pampovoro, a ski-in, ski-out, four-star complex comprising studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments. Prices start at just £30,034 for a studio and £60,806 for two bedrooms. A rental programme guarantees 22.5 per cent over the next five years and Key4Bulgaria projects a 20 per cent per year capital growth. Joey Giuliani at Key4Bulgaria cites Orpheus as “an investor’s dream”.Also in Pampovoro, Dream Homes Worldwide is marketing Forest Nook 3, a complex targeted at an exclusive clientele. Just 600 metres from the pistes, Forest Nook offers studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, all with stunning mountain views and impressive on-site facilities including an indoor pool, gym, steam bath, sauna, beauty salon, snowboard and ski schools, kids area and business centre. Prices start at £27,502 for a studio.Bulgaria’s capital Sofia is one of the fastest-emerging cities in Europe, hot on the heels of Prague and Budapest. New development is everywhere and factors such as greater multinational presence, a buoyant stock market and growing university population are fuelling the growth of the investment property market. Key4Bulgaria is marketing Sofia Centrale, located close to the centre and offering one- and two-bedroom units. The developer has secured long-term rental contracts on all units meaning buyers can avail of a guaranteed six per cent net yield in exchange for a year’s rental. Prices start at £51,707 for one bedroom, £81,304 for two.Dream Homes Worldwide is also selling Sofia property; its Dahlia Residence comprises studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments in the desirable Manastirski Livadi district. Set in gardens, the development will include on-site shopping facilities and a rental agent. Ten minutes from the airport and close to the Business Park Sofia, prices start at £48,895 for a studio. Also with Dream Homes Worldwide – cashing in on the rise of student numbers thanks to the New Bulgarian University that opened in 1991 – is Capital Residences. Perfectly located for the university and the city centre, airport and Aleko ski resort, Capital offers studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with prices starting at £32,595 for a studio – the expected rental income for which is £136 per month.Six months ago, Helen Burrell bought a one-bedroom apartment in Sofia. “I live in London and rent a flat as there’s no way, as a single person, I can afford to get on the property ladder. I was more interested in buying something purely for investment rather than a holiday home and have kept an eye on the emerging markets for a while. Sofia seemed like a good bet – prices are lower than in nearly all other European capitals and predictions for growth are good.” Helen’s investment is already paying off – prices have risen by ten per cent in the six months since she bought and look to go up even more before completion of the development. “I’m really happy,” Helen says. “Hopefully it will mean that one day I might be able to buy a place here in the UK, but in the meantime, I know my money is working for me”.It looks like money invested in Bulgaria will be working hard for some time to come.

Free Advice On How To Ensure The Best Removal Services

October 20th, 2009 StudioFlatsInLondon No comments

House removals can be very stressful, not only for the person having to move their belongings over to their new address but also for the home removal crew coming to help move the belongings over.

Both parties have to contribute and work as a team to ensure the move is successful. Follow these steps to make your house move more pleasurable for yourself but also for everyone helping.

The first that is rather important is to tackle all that is to do with parking. All removal companies will take parking issues very seriously as it could make or break your house move.

As a removal company pulls over at the customer’s address, the first that raises an eyebrow is the parking distance between the van and the pickup door.

Parking issue has to be addressed when booking your van. You should mention everything you think will be of importance such as the fact that there are additional set of stairs outside the building. In case you live on a main road with loads of traffic, make sure you tell the man and van to be wary of it and watch out for your door number. You could also give the removal company some more detailed information such as door numbers and gate shape as informations you get from GPS are very limited.

The amount of people turning up for your house move is an important factor to its success. Removal services in Kent is the most common form of domestic removals used in town. You should also try to be considerate when booking for one person only as some man and van could decide to not move your belongings if they feel you have not booked the right manpower.

Try to put yourself in their shoes. Because of the affordable price charged for house moves, the only way a removal company can make ends meet is by conducting about 3 to 4 moves a day. Doing a job that required more manpower does not only makes the person doing it more tired but also does not enables him to carry out other jobs and meet other engagements.

People should separate themselves from the thoughts that booking for a man and a van instead of two will make them save any money.

Let’s look at it this way: A job that would normally take one man 3 hours to do will only take 2 men 1 hour.

Looking at the way most home removal services charge, there will therefore be saving of £10 for using 2 men instead of one for the house move.

A win-win for all, the customer win on its home removal price and the man with a van is in great shape to go and begin another job.

So how do you know whether to book for one man or more?

The most common thing is the amount of belongings you have in the house or flat. There is only so much one man can carry: moving a studio can be handle without major problem but everything ranging from one bedroom will cause trouble to one man even if there are no furnitures. Although you moved into the flat without much furniture or belongings for that matter, just think of all the unnecessary stuff you have accumulated over the months or years. Even if you do not have any furniture, think of the amount of bags and boxes that will come out of your flat.

To know whether you need to book for a man and a van or two men is the floor you are moving out of and also the amount of stairs leading to the flat or house. Whether there is a lift or not is irrelevant as you shoud think of the amount of trips that will have to be done by the one man to get your possessions down to the van.

When it comes to moving houses, people tend to be very stressed but every step described in this article will ensure you get the most out of it. Always bear in mind that you are not always saving money by going for the cheapest option when booking for one man and van only. Make sure parking is arranged and appropriate restrictions have been arranged at your local council.

Different Sizes of Removals Vans

October 19th, 2009 StudioFlatsInLondon No comments

If you have moving and relocation on the horizon it is well worth researching the size of removals van you will require well in advance.  The price per van can vary quite considerably so finding a personal recommendation from someone you know could be really useful.

During our last move the removals, London removals firm which we used were very reasonable and did not charge us for the mileage of travelling to our location.  Apparently most removals companies do charge a fee for the mileage travelled to get to your property.

After carrying out some research I found some ball park figures, prices and sizes, obviously they are only intended as a rough guide as prices will alter dependent on your location.  It is a must to check whether or not a quote is inclusive of V.A.T. this could be a hidden cost that could cost you extra at the worst possible time.

A light van which is able to provide 250 cubic feet should be suitable to move a small studio apartment.  You would probably have 2 removals men and would be expected to pay a fee of around £165.  The house removal would probably take around 2 hours in total.

A 3.5 t medium Luton van provides 500 cubic feet of space and is suitable for removing a large studio apartment or a small 1 bedroom flat.  You will still have 2 removals men who should be able to carry out the removal in roughly 3 hours.  The fee would be around £300.

A 3.5 t Large Luton van is large enough to provide 700 cubic feet which is suitable for the contents of a large 1 bedroom flat or small 2 bedroom flat.  You would normally have 3 removals men with a van of this size who would take 5 hours to carry out the removal.  You would be charged a fee of around £385 although most removal firms will charge you extra per hour if there are any delays.

The next size up would probably be a 7.5 t lorry, this would provide around 1150 cubic feet of space.  This size lorry is most suitable for house removals for either a small 3 bed property or a large 2 bedroom property.  It would probably take 3 removals men around 6 hours to carry out the house removal on a property of this size.  The fee you would be looking at for this removal would be around £625.

For a large 3 bedroom property or a small 4 bedroom house you will probably need a Combination vehicle which provide upwards of 1150 cubic feet.  For this size property you will probably have 4 removals men and the house removal will take a full day.  For this service you should expect to pay a fee of around £950 for a full days work.

Many removals companies may charge up to 10% extra for a removal on a Saturday and possibly up to 25% for a Sunday removal.  This extra cost could be quite steep so if at all possible try to move earlier in the week for a cheaper price.

It is also worth considering if you will require any handyman services.  It is no use hiring a man and van, only to find you need furniture dismantling, the washing machine and dishwasher un-plumbed or help packing.  Yes you will be expected to pay for these services but it is better to anticipate the difficulties that may come up and possibly pay a little extra to ensure your move goes like a dream.

Reading Corner: Small+Modern+Urban=Home Book Review

October 18th, 2009 StudioFlatsInLondon No comments

Small + Modern + Urban=Home provides many unique examples of how to make the most of a tight space.  It showcases exceptional modern apartments, lofts, duplexes, and studio flats from the world’s biggest and busiest cities such as New York City, London, Taiwan, Madrid, Copenhagen, Shanghai, and Rome.Small + Modern + Urban=Home  encourages readers to maximize their living space through making the most of already existing elements, such as natural lighting or high ceilings, and by making seemingly small changes such as adding lighting or painting an accent wall, that can make a world of difference. Some simple tips that help give the illusion of more space are to add mirrors and to use glass dividers wherever possible.  Also, try to keep the design as minimalistic as possible because a cluttered, crowded room looks smaller.  To achieve this modern, minimalistic look, hide electrical appliances in cupboards.  Be sure to maximize your storage space so everything has its own place, which also makes cleaning a lot easier.More drastic changes such as remodeling a staircase or new flooring will require the services of a contractor but can also be achieved very easily.  In many of these projects, walls were constructed or demolished to make the most of the space.  With a little help, you can completely redesign the look of your space. The key to making your small space work for you is creativity. In the Interlocking Puzzle Loft designed by Kyu Sung Woo Architects in New York City, the structure that supports the top floor of the Loft doubles as a closet.  In the Penthouse in Andora designed by Elisabeth Faura and Gerard Veciana in Andorra la vella, Andorra a small wall was built in the master bedroom to separate the dressing room from the bed area. The essence of the beauty of the spaces displayed in Small + Modern + Urban=Home is expressed through their modern, minimalistic design.  To recreate these looks in your own space, consider making some of the changes offered in this book.   Start with something small such as painting, and build your way up to bigger remodeling projects.Small + Modern +Urban = Home.
